Emilio sez:

Special features time! Hoo boy, have I got a lot to say about this filler.

As I stated at the beginning of the comic, I drew this darn strip a lot. I finished at least five, finished lineart for another, and started sketching about five more of them. I'm not sure about the exact dates, but the panel labeled "1" was drawn in June or July, the ones labeled "2" were drawn in August, and the ones labeled "3" were drawn in September. The lower version was drawn in October. The final version was drawn in November.

All I'm saying is that I drew this one a lot, but I'm glad that I did. Whiplash would be a lot different if I'd started with the first finished version I got. For one, I'd have had less time to develop the plot, and so would have gone on another totally different path compared to what I have now. Also, I wouldn't even call this comic "Whiplash." It would be called "Just Another Story."

Now for notes on what you see:

  1. Yep, Miles is still in this page, albeit without his suit. Also, I switched who was saying what. Nick originally said "Hello, I'm Nick and this other guy is Ben." Or did I switch the character designs as time went on? I mean, the thing with the shirt symbols is sorta confusing me right now. Gaaaah! I'm moving on.
  2. Notice anything different about the eyes? Yep, I actually tested about 5 different eye styles, and this was my runner-up style. Also, yes, his name was originally Ben. In fact, the only three major characters who have not changed radically in name, design, or both since conception are Miles, Steve, and someone I haven't revealed yet.
  3. Yay! A background! I actually make a couple and then use them for multiple strips, so this particular background could actually resurface eventually. I have no clue what I was thinking while drawing Nick's hair. It just looks so weird.... but he's got the right shirt now. Yay!
  4. Well, this one on the bottom is probably the closest to what I have now. Somehow, I decided I like the name "Kyle" better than I liked the name "Ben" and thus changed his name, hairdo, and garb. Also, this was the only one drawn in a portrait-style comic instead of landscape. Besides rather improving the art, I think I can actually write off a lot of these as me redoing the comic format. I kept changing it so I'd get more space to draw in, and the end format was what you see today. I like it as is, so I'm sticking with it.

One last note? These aren't even the original first strips. The first first strip was Miles making a loud comment (it eventually evolved into this). The second first strip no longer makes sense in the story I have now. I can't show either of them, because they would still reveal a lot of plot details.

Hey, this is my longest commentary so far! cool! As a text document, it's over 3000! (bytes)

Edit: I found another one, so I'm putting it on.
